The Beauty of Pattachitra Art

The Beauty of Pattachitra Art

Origin and History

Originating in the artistic Patua community of Odhisha in Eastern India, Pattachitra paintings are beautiful creations on cloth or handmade paper, often depicting Indian mythological stories, religious themes, folklore, and legends. Known for their vibrant colours, intricate details, and the use of traditional themes, Pattachitra paintings have a rich history that dates back over a thousand years.

Long before the advent of WhatsApp, social media, streaming platforms, and even cinema, people have been inventing innovative ways to entertain and educate. Pattachitra ‘chitrakars’ or painters, travelled far and wide across the country, using their beautiful, colourful paintings to tell engaging stories of love, passion, wars, and valour. These paintings were also used as a medium for connecting people with their cultural and religious roots through storytelling during community gatherings.

This stunning art form is not restricted to the Odisha region, but can also be seen in other parts of India including West Bengal and Bihar.

The Technique

Traditional Pattachitra paintings are created using natural pigments derived from plants, stones, and minerals, on handmade cloth or paper. The process starts with the skilled chitrakars drawing the outlines of the characters, backgrounds, and patterns with ink. Once this has dried completely, brightly coloured pigments are used to fill the outlines carefully. Finally, the paintings are finished with bold lines, intricate detailing and stylised patterns, resulting in breathtakingly beautiful pieces of art.

Evolution and Adaptation

Over the years, Pattachitra artists have adapted their art to meet the changing audience landscapes, addressing modern themes/ issues, and using canvases and paints, without compromising on the overall look and quality of the art. One can even find prints of Pattachitra art on home décor items like cushion covers, lampshades, and bedspreads.
